Day 16 Flagstaff 5.3.24

Woke to this at 5am and decided to climb back into bed ❄
The cars had ice on them.

We decided today we would explore on foot.

Our first walk, along route 66, was to Frys supermarket to get some fruit and milk. Bonus they had a Starbucks instore so we had our morning coffee. It was very chilly and coats were snuggled into. For some strange reason Mark still wore shorts 🀷‍♀️

Our 2nd walk was back along route 66 to downtown Flagstaff to find the information centre and see what we could do.

Built in 1926.

We decided to do 2 self guided walking tours. The first was a Historic Downtown tour.
As a stop on the transcontinental Santa Fe Railroad, the train station was once the most important building in downtown Flagstaff.
Today the main depot still operates as an Amtrak station. A visitor centre is also in operation.
The McMillan building was being constructed as a bank in 1886 but the bank ran out of money! McMillan finished the building and one of the tenants became the Bank Hotel.

The Weatherford hotel opened 1.1.1900.
The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1917 after the previous theatre collapsed under the weight of 5 feet of snow.
Babbitt Brothers building, on the left, Flagstaffs first 2 story building.
The Monte Vista Hotel opened in 1927.

We found a lovely little out of the way place for a coffee and the most delicious smores danish.

A mural on the side of a bike shop.

Railway building.
The 2nd tour was on the otherside of downtown more about route 66.
The Downtowner Motel operated as a brothel, hotel, tourist and auto court and motel Γ²ver the years. A couple was murdered here in 1916. The sign was erected in 1930s to compete for business after route 66 was relocated.

Built in 1926 from local Moenkopi sandstone. It was built as a boarding house and it still serves the same purpose.
Flagstaff's first Route 66 motel, built in 1929.
A cute little house with a big pile of snow under the window.
Mike's Pike follows the path of a railroad spur that ran from the main rail line to the lumber mill in the late 1800s. The triangular building was originally built as a commercial laundry in the 1920s.

Apartment building.

I never get tired of looking at this view.

We have decided to go to the theatre 🎢 tonight so blog will be finished tomorrow.

Our relationship started at an ABBA tribute concert and here we 12 days short of 23years and we're at an ABBA tribute concert.
After seeing the real ABBA in 1978 I was a little disappointed but I did enjoy the show. It was awesome to see so many young people up and dancing and singing along to songs that were released before they were born.

A couple of old farts singing along.
A few videos from the concert.  There may be someone in the crowd singing along rather dreadfully πŸ™„πŸ˜΅‍πŸ’«πŸ€£

I think Mark found the dreadful singer 🎀

The temperature was 0 when I went to bed just before midnight.

Day 90. Home. 18.5.24

A very cruisy flight. Arrived back in Brisbane half hour early.  I caught up on some movies and we both managed a couple of hours snoozing. ...
